🧿 Runes: Ancient Codes, Ritual Power, and Energetic Truth
Runes are not just symbols. They are energetic codes—each one a living archetype carved into the bones of ancient memory. I use runes in my rituals, readings, and product design when the energy calls for it. I don’t assign personal birth runes or offer custom calculations. What I do is work with runes as tools of activation—to clear, to protect, to set intention, and to move energy through the body and the space.
I work primarily with the Elder Futhark, the oldest known runic alphabet. These 24 symbols weren’t created for decoration. They were carved into wood, stone, and yes—bone—because bone carried life force. It was durable, sacred, and personal. When someone etched a rune into bone, they weren’t just writing. They were encoding power into the remains of something once alive. That’s ritual. That’s transmission.
đź”® What Are Runes?
Runes are part of an ancient alphabet used by Germanic and Norse cultures. The Elder Futhark is the foundational system—24 runes, each with its own vibration, mythic story, and spiritual function. These weren’t just letters. They were sigils of force, used for writing, divination, protection, and spellwork.
The word rune comes from the Old Norse rún, meaning secret or mystery. These symbols were carved into weapons, ships, grave markers, and ritual tools. They weren’t just for communication—they were for activation.
⚔️ Runes and the Vikings: Symbols That Sailed
The Vikings didn’t just carve runes into stone—they lived by them. These symbols were etched into ships, weapons, amulets, and grave markers, not just for communication, but for protection, power, and spiritual guidance.
Runes like Raido (ᚱ), symbolizing travel and movement, and Laguz (ᛚ), representing water and flow, were often inscribed on ships to invoke safe passage across treacherous seas. Wunjo (ᚹ), the rune of joy and harmony, might be added to ensure a successful and peaceful voyage. These weren’t decorations—they were navigational prayers, carved into the wood like spells.
According to Norse mythology, runes were discovered by Odin, who hung from the World Tree, Yggdrasil, for nine days and nights in a sacrificial ritual to gain their wisdom. That origin story alone tells you everything: runes were sacred, earned through pain, and passed down as tools of divine insight.
🧠What Do the Runes Mean?
Each rune carries a distinct frequency. Here are a few I work with often:
- Fehu: Wealth, energetic flow, beginnings
- Uruz: Strength, wildness, primal force
- Ansuz: Divine communication, breath, wisdom
- Gebo: Sacred exchange, energetic contracts
- Algiz: Protection, guardianship, instinct
- Sowilo: Solar clarity, success, victory
- Isa: Stillness, clarity, pause
- Thurisaz: Boundaries, shadow work, confrontation
These meanings aren’t just historical—they’re alive. I use runes in bay leaf burning, intention setting, and energetic clearing. I include rune cards in some of my posts and rituals. I share the most popular runes with quick tips for how to work with them. Your body becomes part of the activation. These symbols move through you.
🧿 Why the Elder Futhark?
The Elder Futhark is the most popular and widely used runic alphabet today. Despite being ancient, it’s deeply embedded in modern spiritual practices, artistic expression, and popular culture.
Why it remains the top choice:
- Divination and modern paganism: Its connection to Norse mythology and mystical symbolism makes it the go-to system for rune casting and spiritual work.
- Popular culture: With 24 distinct runes, Elder Futhark is the most recognizable version—featured in fantasy literature, video games, and television.
- Academic and artistic interest: Historians, linguists, and creators study and use it as a source of inspiration and cultural depth.
Other systems exist, like the Younger Futhark (used by Vikings, with only 16 runes) and the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc (with up to 33 runes), but Elder Futhark is the one I channel in ritual, in readings, and in product design when the energy calls for it.
🧬 What Are Combined Runes?
Sometimes runes are cast together. Sometimes they’re fused into bindrunes—layered symbols that amplify meaning. A bindrune isn’t just a design. It’s a custom sigil. A spell. A portal.
For example:
- Gebo + Algiz might represent sacred protection in relationships
- Fehu + Sowilo could amplify wealth and success
- Thurisaz + Isa might freeze conflict or block negative energy
I don’t assign bindrunes to individuals. But I do use combinations in ritual when the energy calls for it.
🎂 What Is a Birth Rune?
A birth rune is a symbolic anchor tied to your date of birth, often calculated using the runic calendar or seasonal correspondences. It’s a lens—not a label. A way to understand the energetic tone you were born into.
I don’t offer personal birth rune calculations. If you want to explore that path, check out:

I use runes in ritual—not to define you, but to move energy and open space for clarity.
đź“– What Does the Bible Say About Runes?
The Bible doesn’t mention runes directly. These symbols come from Norse and Germanic traditions, while the Bible is rooted in Hebrew and Greek texts. Some Christians avoid runes due to their pagan origin. Others see them as symbolic tools for reflection and energetic work.
If you’re blending spiritual paths, it’s about intention. Runes aren’t inherently incompatible with faith—they’re ancient symbols of truth, protection, and transformation.
🧙‍♀️ What Are Runes Used For?
Historically:
- Carved into weapons, tombs, and sacred objects
- Used for writing, spellwork, and divination
- Marked boundaries and encoded power
In modern ritual:
- Energy clearing
- Intention setting
- Symbolic anchoring
- Spiritual guidance
I use runes in tarot readings when the energy calls for it. They show up when needed—not on demand. I include them in clearing work, intention rituals, and energetic resets. Whether you’re calling in a new job, reconnecting with love, or releasing what no longer serves, runes are part of the process.
🛍️ Runes in My Offerings
I include runes in select products when the energy aligns. One example is my rune sweatshirt—a wearable sigil used in ritual, readings, and sacred work. It’s not just a design. It’s a transmission.
“This isn’t just a sweatshirt. It’s a wearable altar. A reminder that symbols speak louder than words—and energy moves through what we wear.”
More rune-infused items will be added as the energy calls for them. I don’t dilute the magic. I channel what’s needed.
🔥 Rituals and Readings
At the bottom of this article, you’ll find a few ritual tips for working with runes. If you’re interested in a clearing and reading, I offer sessions that support:
- Calling in a new job
- Reconnecting with a current love
- Opening space for new relationships
- Releasing energetic blocks
- Or whatever you’re truly seeking
These sessions are direct, intentional, and energetically clean. Runes may be included depending on what shows up in your reading.
Runes aren’t trendy. They’re timeless. And when you work with them intentionally, they become more than symbols—they become tools of transformation.
