“By the time I was twelve, I started babysitting for a group of people in our small town. They would bring nine or ten kids to one house so I could keep them all together. And they would argue about whose house we were going to use, because when I was there, the kids had fun, the house got cleaned, and the parents came home to order instead of chaos. I figured out something— if you let kids play first, really play and wrestle, then cleaning becomes part of the game. They help because they feel good, you have changed their frequency.

That’s how I started buying my own clothes. That’s how I learned that my time and energy had value. There were weekends where I made almost as much as my mom did all week — not because she wasn’t working hard, but because she was working for minimum wage without overtime.

That “work your ass off for everything you get” belief didn’t come from a motivational poster. It came from watching two parents grind themselves down just to keep us afloat. It came from seeing my dad either not working and making no money and most of the time when he was working he blew it all anyway. It came from seeing my mom exhausted, still saying yes to more shifts just to keep food on the table. It came from understanding, way too early, that money wasn’t just numbers. It was pressure. It was uncertainty. It was the thing that decided whether the house was calm or tense.

And adulthood didn’t magically erase any of that coding. It followed me like a shadow. The industry I worked in was just as unstable as the oil fields—one moment files are flying across my desk and everyone is hiring, the next moment companies are shutting their doors and locking you out. And there I was, a single parent of two kids, carrying the exact same heavy survival fear I watched my parents carry, except now it was sitting right on my chest every single morning. To change this, we have to start cutting those subconscious ties. You have to look at the repetitive phrases you inherited from your family—things like “we can’t afford that,” “money doesn’t grow on trees,” or “who do you think you are?” You have to separate your own goals from your ancestors’ fears. This is how you break the silent contract of struggle.”
